Optimizing Flatness with Selective Roll Cooling

We are the only spray nozzle manufacturer in the world that makes selective roll cooling systems for asymmetrical thermal expansion of roll surfaces. Selectospray's are used by  mills that produce flat products.

Manual, PLC or shape meter signals activate solenoids located in a remote cabinet.  Each solenoid interfaces with a Modulax Valve, controlling it's position as either opened or closed.  Each solenoid controls opposing spray valves in the same vertical plane above and below the pass line so that both top and bottom rolls receive the same selective cooling.

Selectospray headers are tied into a shape roll system and as hot spots are detected across the shape roll, banks of nozzles are activated to provide additional cooling to the "hot" zone(s). The design of the Modulax valve eliminates diaphragms and maintenance associated with other systems. Selectospray systems are extremely reliable and maintenance friendly.  The four major advantages of our Modulax spray valve are: 79B.jpg (277244 bytes)

  1. Four large inlet ports together with a large bore to the nozzle resists clogging.
  2. Air pressure to coolant ratio is only 1:2, so you can operate at higher liquid pressures without having to increase compressor power.
  3. Only one moving part! The lightweight Delrin piston is the only moving part, which is one reason this patented spray valve is so reliable.
  4. Cooling efficiency.  The design of the Modulax valve minimizes pressure loss, cavitation and turbulence of the coolant traveling through the spray valve.   Together these flow conditions allow instant formation of an exact spray pattern and distribution, which is critical for optimized heat transfer from the roll to coolant.

Selectospray systems are custom designed to fit your mill and are highly specialized.  Once you’ve reached step #3 in the preceding "seven steps to improving your nozzle system" (decision), engineers  will visit your mill and perform an evaluation. The resulting report/proposal will lay the framework for upgrading your roll cooing system.

If you have a possible application for a Selectospray system, please contact us and ask for our special 11 page catalog that describes these systems and/or fill-out the form below.
